As a nurse, it’s easy to forget that things like needles and medicines are scary for most people. Caregivers often count childhood vaccinations as one of the most unpleasant experiences of parenthood. Nobody likes to see their child hurt, even if it’s momentary or for a greater good. The anticipation of an unpleasant event leaves a parent’s door open for fear and doubt.- this open door is being exploited. I know our patient loads are big, I know we put up walls to preserve our own mental health, but if we continue to leave this door open, the children suffer. We have to help close this door when we have the opportunity.

Every patient contact from OB services, to emergency services to pediatric visits is an opportunity to address parental concerns about vaccines in an open, honest and caring fashion. Encourage the conversation!
